ERP FUNDAMENTALS

sap funda

Enterprise resource planning (ERP) is a cross-functional system driven by an integrated suite of software modules that support the internal business processes of a company. Its goal is to integrate all departments and functions across a company onto a single system that can support different departments’ needs.

Prior to ERP, companies would utilize different systems for various business functions; Finance, HR, inventory, sales and distribution, and so on. The various systems might be developed internally or purchased and integration between systems was very limited.

As an example, when a customer places an order, a company employee might need to contact the department in charge of inventory to get the level of stock, contact the finance department to know the financial status of the customer, and contact the logistics department to provide delivery dates. This way of operating might cause delays, lost orders and is prompt to errors. In the long run, this could make the company less efficient which in turn affects its profits.

An ERP system allows a company to have a single enterprise system and data repository for all its core business processes. Since all the modules (Finance, HR, etc) are integrated, users will have all the information they need with the click of a mouse.
